Trapped or Freed

Artist: Uma Shankar

Why is my poetry trapped in rhyme
It happened again, for the nth time!
To change how the words come out, I took many a class
Stop here or gently pass.

Why is my poetry trapped in rhyme
Do I believe it makes my rambling sublime?
I’ve begged my vice to leave, but it replies, to my surprise
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Whether I write about man or nature
I feel like a gymnast sticking her landing with this feature
I stand by the window, waiting for that wet sound
There will come soft rain and the smell of the ground.

Words keep me company when no one else does
Loved ones have paths to blaze, their lives abuzz
Rhyme untangles and beatifies what I see
But I think I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree.
